UCB welcomes new MCD students of Monash college

Universal College Bangladesh (UCB) recently held an Orientation Day Program for the incoming batch of Monash College MCD students for the year 2024. The event, hosted at UCB’s campus on Gulshan Avenue, was geared towards familiarizing students with the college environment and academic expectations. মোনাশ কলেজ ডিপ্লোমা প্রোগ্রামের ওরিয়েন্টেশন ডে অনুষ্ঠিত

চলতি বছর মোনাশ কলেজ ডিপ্লোমা প্রোগ্রামের প্রথম ব্যাচের ওরিয়েন্টেশন ডে উদযাপন করেছে ইউনিভার্সাল কলেজ বাংলাদেশ (ইউসিবি)। রাজধানীর গুলশান এভিনিউ’র এসএ টাওয়ারে নিজেদের ক্যাম্পাসে চলতি বছরের প্রথম ব্যাচের শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য এই আয়োজন করে বাংলাদেশে মোনাশ কলেজ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার একমাত্র অংশীদার প্রতিষ্ঠান ইউসিবি। ‘ওরিয়েন্টেশন ডে প্রোগ্রাম’ এর শুরুতে ইউসিবি’র ডিন অব অ্যাকাডেমিক অ্যাফেয়ার্স প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইসমাইল হোসেন এবং প্রেসিডেন্ট ও প্রভোস্ট প্রফেসর হিউ গিল তাদের স্বাগত বক্তব্য উপস্থাপন করেন। এরপর ক্যাম্পাস লাইফ শোকেস এবং ইউসিবি’র সিনিয়র লেকচারার ও বিজনেস কোঅর্ডিনেটর সুমাইয়া বিনতে কবির এবং অ্যাসিস্টেন্ট প্রফেসর ও স্টেম কোঅর্ডিনেটর ড. সাদিয়া আফরিনের পরিবেশনায় প্রোগ্রাম ওভারভিউ সেশন ছিল। এ আয়োজনকে কার্যকরী ও ফলপ্রসূ করে তোলে ইউসিবি’র অ্যাটেন্ডেন্স পলিসি, অ্যাকাডেমিক কোড অব কন্ডাক্টস, অ্যাকাডেমিক ইন্টিগ্রিটি এন্ড কেসেস এবং ইন্ট্রোডাকশন টু কাউন্সেলিং-সহ বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিক নিয়ে আলোচনা। এছাড়াও অনুষ্ঠানে ইউসিবি’র লেকচারার রাজন আহমেদ নিউমেরিক্যাল এন্ড স্টাডি স্কিলসের ওপর একটি সেশন পরিচালনা করেন। ওরিয়েন্টেশন ডে প্রোগ্রামে অংশগ্রহণকারীরা মোনাশ প্রোগ্রামে অধ্যয়নের খুঁটিনাটি বিভিন্ন দিক ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়মনীতিসহ প্রয়োজনীয় অ্যাকাডেমিক টুলস, মোনাশ ও ইউসিবি অ্যাকাউন্ট তৈরি ও ব্যবহারের নিয়ম, মুডল’এর সাহায্যে কোর্স ব্যবস্থাপনার মত বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে সম্যক ধারণা অর্জন করেন। ইউসিবি’র প্রেসিডেন্ট ও প্রভোস্ট প্রফেসর হিউ গিল বলেন, ‘ইউসিবি পরিবারে নতুন সদস্যদের স্বাগত জানাতে পেরে আমরা খুবই আনন্দিত। এই শিক্ষার্থীরা নিজেদের শিক্ষাজীবনের এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অধ্যায় শুরু করতে যাচ্ছে । বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীদের আন্তর্জাতিক মানের শিক্ষাসুবিধা দানের লক্ষ্যে আমরা একাগ্রে কাজ করে চলেছি। তরুণ ও মেধাবী ছাত্রছাত্রীরা যেন তাদের স্বপ্নের ক্যারিয়ার গঠনের জন্য সঠিক সুবিধা ও শিক্ষার উন্নত অভিজ্ঞতা লাভ করে, তা নিশ্চিতে আমাদের চেষ্টা অব্যহত থাকবে।’   Published in: Mzamin

UCB Quiz winners receive grand prize worth BDT 40 thousand

The country’s first ever online quiz for high school and college-level students, organised by Universal College Bangladesh (UCB), has announced its champion. Muhammad Hasin Raihan from Dhaka College has triumphed at the “UCB Quiz” held for grade 10 – 12 students from all over Bangladesh. Hasin and other winners were awarded certificates and received a combined prize worth BDT 40 thousand. UCB organised a grand award ceremony on February 17 at the UCB campus in Gulshan to recognise the students’ meritorious efforts. Prof. Hew Gill, President and Provost, UCB and Amit Prasad, Chief Operating Officer, UCB, handed over the prize and certificates to the winners. The first prize went to Muhammad Hasin Rahman from Dhaka College; the second prize went to Ahnaf Anis from Adamjee Cantonment College; the third prize went to Aribah Farzeen Shah from The Aga Khan School, Dhaka (AKSD); the fourth prize went to Zawad Islam from Playpen School, and the fifth prize went to Wazee Wahid Sazid from Adamjee Cantonment College. The contest which took place earlier this month received a great response with students registering from more than 80 schools across the country. Bangladeshi youngsters embracing new discipline abroad

In an emerging country like Bangladesh that is also vulnerable to climate and other uncertainties, Actuarial Science may offer mathematical solutions to economic and demographic challenges should there be experts of the subject. Two Bangladeshi young students, MD Mahdi Hossain and Faiaz Maksudul Haque, have ventured into the undergrad programme of Actuarial Science at Monash University Australia with an aim to apply the knowledge back home for contributing to resilient development. They have chosen the relatively new discipline while carrying out the Monash College MCD at Universal College Bangladesh (UCB) as part of pursuing their dream of studying at a reputed foreign university. “While studying a Business Analytics course, I discovered a keen interest in Actuarial Science. The fact that we can practically assess financial risks through mathematical and statistical tools really intrigued me,” Mahdi recalled. Faiaz said, “While deciding on a specialised subject area, I was also looking for a relatively less-explored option, which eventually led me to choose Actuarial Science.” Beginning their journey at Monash Australia, the two friends, former students of Manarat Dhaka International School and College, have further realised that Actuarial Science is an extremely important field of study and there still isn’t much scope for higher studies in this field in Bangladesh. “Even here at Monash, it is still a fairly new program that is undergoing development,” Faiaz argued. They recognise that the programme at UCB equipped them with the knowledge and skills required for an overseas undergraduate degree and ensured a direct progression to pursuing education at Monash Australia. Faiaz pointed out that the courses landed him the opportunity to complete the studies in Monash Australia. Mahdi observed, “It made my dream come true!” Beginning their journey at Monash Australia, the two friends, former students of Manarat Dhaka International School and College, have further realised that Actuarial Science is an extremely important field of study and there still isn’t much scope for higher studies in this field in Bangladesh. “Even here at Monash, it is still a fairly new program that is undergoing development,” Faiaz argued. Upon completion of their graduation, they have plans to return to Bangladesh and they want to be part of the country’s development and growth. “I want to leverage my skills and knowledge gained throughout my academic journey at Monash to make a meaningful impact within the Actuary sector of Bangladesh,” Mahdi said. Faiaz echoed the sentiment saying, “My main goal for now is to make impactful contributions within the field of Actuarial Science, in Bangladesh.” Bangladesh, as one of the fastest growing economies, blessed with higher number of young population but faced with climate change difficulties, would need to consolidate its development base and grow further in the coming years and decades. Actuarial Science discipline, which incorporates mathematics and financial theory to determine the financial effects of uncertain future events, may help development planners and corporations to take measures to ensure sustainable development. As thousands of students go abroad every year to acquire sophisticated knowledge and skills, the country may benefit from the ones like Faiaz and Mahdi for their exposure to overseas education and if they decide positively on serving the motherland. Institutions like UCB provide the path to pursuing foreign degrees and acquiring up-to-date knowledge and skills. On the passion and objective of studying abroad, Mahdi recommended: “You should be mentally prepared to face unprecedented barriers. Keep your spirit high and stay confident.” Faiaz added, “Being fully informed and confident is essential. UCB helps students discover global opportunities at Monash Info Day

With a vision to help Bangladeshi students effectively explore academic opportunities across the globe, Universal College Bangladesh (UCB), the exclusive partner of Monash College, Australia in Bangladesh, recently organized Monash Info Day. The event was held yesterday (February 05, 2024) at Universal College Bangladesh (UCB) Campus in the capital’s SA Tower, 1 Gulshan Avenue area. Besides guests, students, and representatives, Prof. Hew Gill, President, and Provost, UCB; S. Azra Karim, Country Representative in Bangladesh, International Student Recruitment (ISR), Monash University, Admission and Communication; and Daniel Lum, Senior Executive, International Recruitment and Development, Marketing and Future Students, Monash University, Malaysia, were present at the occasion. The event included a seminar on available opportunities for Business, IT, and Engineering in Australia and Malaysia, where special guests presented their thoughts. বিশ্বজুড়ে উচ্চশিক্ষা গ্রহণের ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীরা যেনো আরও কার্যকরী উপায়ে শিক্ষাগ্রহণের সুযোগ সম্পর্কে জানতে পারে এ লক্ষ্যে মোনাশ ইনফো ডে আয়োজিত হয়েছে। এই অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছে বাংলাদেশে মোনাশ কলেজ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার একমাত্র অংশীদার ইনিভার্সাল কলেজ বাংলাদেশ (ইউসিবি)। ৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি রাজধানীর গুলশান ১ অ্যাভিনিউয়ের এসএ টাওয়ারে অবস্থিত ইউসিবি ক্যাম্পাসে এই অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ইউসিবির প্রেসিডেন্ট ও প্রভোস্ট অধ্যাপক হিউ গিল, মোনাশ ইউনিভার্সিটি অ্যাডমিশন ও কমিউনিকেশনের ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্টুডেন্ট রিক্রুটমেন্টের (আইএসআর) বাংলাদেশে কান্ট্রি রিপ্রেজেন্টেটিভ এস. আজরা করিম এবং মোনাশ ইউনিভার্সিটি, মালয়েশিয়ার মার্কেটিং অ্যান্ড ফিউচার স্টুডেন্টসের ইন্টারন্যাশনাল রিক্রুটমেন্ট অ্যান্ড ডেভেলপমেন্ট সিনিয়র এক্সিকিউটিভ ড্যানিয়েল লাম। এ ছাড়াও উপস্থিত ছিলেন অনুষ্ঠানে আসা অতিথি, শিক্ষার্থী ও প্রতিনিধিরা। অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও মালয়েশিয়ায় বিজনেস, আইটি ও ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিংয়ের সুযোগ সম্পর্কিত সেমিনার দিয়ে অনুষ্ঠানটি শুরু হয়, যেখানে বিশেষ অতিথিরা তাদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মতামত তুলে ধরেন। প্রথমেই সবাইকে অভ্যর্থনা জানান ইউসিবির এলএসই – এনরোলমেন্ট কাউন্সিলর তানহা কাশফিয়া কেইট। এরপর ইউসিবি ও মোনাশের প্রতিনিধিরা সেশন ও প্রেজেন্টেশনের মধ্য দিয়ে নানা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় তুলে ধরেন। অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও মালয়েশিয়ার মোনাশ প্রতিনিধিদের সাথে শিক্ষার্থীদের যোগাযোগ ও মতবিনিময়ের সুবর্ণ সুযোগ হিসেবে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় আয়োজন, যেখানে শিক্ষার্থীরা তাদের যোগাযোগের পরিধি বিস্তৃতির সুযোগ লাভ করেন। অনুষ্ঠানে অ্যাকাডেমিক অ্যাসেসমেন্ট, ওয়ান-অন-ওয়ান অ্যাকাডেমিক কাউন্সিলিং সেশন, ক্যাম্পাস ট্যুর, ক্যারিয়ার নির্দেশনা ও তাৎক্ষণিক অফার লেটার দেওয়ার মতো নানা প্রোগ্রামের মধ্য দিয়ে শিক্ষার্থীরা উপকৃত হন। অনুষ্ঠানে শিক্ষার্থী ও অতিথিরা স্কলারশিপ অ্যাসেসমেন্ট সম্পর্কেও বিস্তারিত জানার সুযোগ পান; বিশেষ করে, ইনফো ডে’তে ভর্তির ক্ষেত্রে তারা ৪০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত বৃত্তিলাভের সুযোগ পান। অনুষ্ঠানটি সকল ‘ও’ বা ‘এ’ লেভেলের শিক্ষার্থী ও মোনাশ প্রোগ্রামে অধীনে থাকা ইউসিবির বর্তমান শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য উন্মুক্ত ছিল। এ বিষয়ে ইউসিবির প্রেসিডেন্ট ও প্রভোস্ট অধ্যাপক হিউ গিল বলেন, “নিজেদের ভবিষ্যৎ গঠনে বিশ্বজুড়ে উচ্চশিক্ষার সম্ভাবনা সম্পর্কে জানতে অনুষ্ঠানে সম্ভাবনাময় তরুণ শিক্ষার্থীরা উপস্থিত হয়েছেন; এটা সত্যিকার অর্থেই আনন্দদায়ক। ইউসিবি প্রত্যেক শিক্ষার্থীর পূর্ণ সম্ভাবনায় বিশ্বাস করে; সামান্য একটু প্রেরণা পেলেই তারা অসাধ্য সাধন করতে পারবে। বৈশ্বিক পর্যায়ে নিজেদের লক্ষ্য পূরণে আগ্রহী সবাইকে অনুপ্রাণিত করতেই এই মোনাশ ইনফো ডে’র আয়োজন করা হয়েছে। ইউনিভার্সাল কলেজ বাংলাদেশ (ইউসিবি) মোনাশ কলেজ, অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বিশেষ অংশীদার এবং শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়-কর্তৃক অনুমোদিত দেশের প্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক শিক্ষা প্রদানকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান। শিক্ষার্থীরা তাদের ও/এএস/এ/এইচএসসি সম্পন্ন করার পরপরই বাংলাদেশে ইউসিবির আন্তর্জাতিক প্রোগ্রামে ভর্তির মাধ্যমে মোনাশ ইউনিভার্সিটি বা ইউনিভার্সিটি অব লন্ডন – এলএসইতে ডিগ্রি অর্জনে যাত্রা শুরু করতে পারবেন। এখানে শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য একইরকম গ্লোবাল অ্যাকাডেমিক কারিকুলামে শিক্ষাগ্রহণ ও সাশ্রয়ী টিউশন ফি গ্রহণের সুযোগ রয়েছে। তাদের প্রোগ্রাম ও কর্মশালা সম্পর্কে আরও বিস্তারিত জানা যাবে https://ucbd.edu.bd/ এই ওয়েবসাইটে।   Published in: Dailyprothomsangbad

Aura attained her bachelor’s (BSc in Biomedical Sciences) from University College London, United Kingdom. She then completed her master’s (Msc in Biotechnology) from North South University. Her research interest lies in the field of genomic epidemiology of infectious diseases. Her contribution in several local and international research projects have led to publications in several highly ranked peer-reviewed journals including BMC Genomics, Nature Scientific Reports, Science and FEMS Microbiology Letters.

Nahida Parvin

Habiba Kibria

Ms Habiba Kibria is a working as a Senior Lecturer at Universal College Bangladesh. She completed her Masters in Marketing from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia and holds a double degree in Bachelor of Marketing and Human Resource Management from North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. She has been in academia throughout her career- from being a Lecturer to a Student Councilor to a Country Manager for a foreign university. Her area of interest lies in customer service management, consumer behavior and digital marketing. She holds the Duke of Edinburgh award at Broze level and has been awarded as one of the best project coordinators during her high school community service days. Farin Daulah

Senior Lecturer

Ms Farin Daula is working as a senior lecturer at UCB. She is a trained education professional from the UK and has a degree in Education and English from University of Surrey, UK. She also holds a Master’s in management from Westminster University, UK. Ms Farin received her teacher training at the department of Continuing Education, University of Oxford, UK. Ms Farin is the founder of the education platform, One Circle. She is a certified mental health first aider and a life coach. She has extensive experience in the life-skills education sector, working in various schools and non-profit organizations in London and Dhaka. She is the author of the Tara and Joy children’s book series. The first book of this series called “Tara and Joy: Body Safety” is available now both in Bengali and English version.

Sumaiya Binte Kabir

Sumaiya Binte Kabir is working as a senior lecturer at Universal College Bangladesh. She is also acting as the Monash College MCD of Business Program Coordinator. Sumaiya has attained both her BSS and MSS degree majoring in Economics from University of Dhaka. She has achieved the Bangladesh Bank Governor’s Scholarship for academic excellence. She is also actively involved in voluntary work in different animal welfare organizations. Her research interest lies in the field of public economics, environmental economics, development economics, consumer behavior and higher education marketing.

Dr. Sadia Afreen

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sadia Afreen is an assistant professor at the Universal College Bangladesh (UCB). She completed BSc in Chemical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). She obtained her PhD from the University of Nottingham and then completed her postdoctoral research at Nanjing University in the field of chemical engineering. Her research expertise is in applied chemistry and nanotechnology. She has significant publications in her areas of research, and she contributed as a journal reviewer to prestigious journals in her fields of expertise. She earned the Postgraduate Student Teachers Certificate during her postgraduate study at the University of Nottingham. She worked in the hall committee, conference committee at the University of Nottingham; teaching and learning subcommittee, and program coordinator in the Monash College MCD program at UCB. She worked in industry and had several engineering and research training at home and abroad.

Prof. Muhammad Ismail Hossain

Professor & Dean of Academic Affairs

Muhammad Ismail Hossain is a Professor and Dean of Academic Affairs, Monash & LSE Program at Universal College Bangladesh. He is on leave from his earlier appointment as Professor of Marketing at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Prof. Hossain received his Ph.D. in consumer behavior from Monash University, Australia. He is an MBA from the University of Dhaka and also has a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Melbourne, Australia. His research interests lie in the fields of tourism, consumer behavior, and supply chain management. He is one of the co-authors of the book Social Media Storms: Empowering Leadership beyond Crisis Management published by Routledge. He has more than 50 publications including books, research monographs, journal articles, newspaper articles, and keynote papers. His work has been published in many international high-impact journals such as the Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Recreation Research, Current Issues in Tourism, International Journal of Tourism Research, and Journal of City, Culture, and Society among others. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Travel Research, the leading tourism journal in the world. He has received a notable amount of external research funding locally as well as internationally as part of various international and local research groups. The value of such local and international funding is BDT 1.06 crores and USD 827,873 respectively. As a consultant, he worked for government projects, not-for-profits, and for-profit local and international organizations.
