From Chattogram to the world: UCBD’s role in shaping global futures
Sometimes, all it takes to achieve real success in life is the courage to step out of your comfort zone. For many students, that step begins with a decision that challenges the traditional route and opens new possibilities. For Mashrur and Bareerah, who are both from Chattogram, that decision took them to Universal College Bangladesh (UCBD), which has become a trusted education partner for Bangladeshi students to launch their global academic journeys. Bareerah Al Manha Begh Finding UCBD Mashrur, a former student of CIDER International School, first heard about UCBD from a senior. “I was surprised when I learned that an institution in Dhaka was offering Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY). I always thought these were only available overseas,” said Mashrur. He added, “At first, I was a little sceptical. But after doing some research and learning that many of my peers had actually gone abroad from UCBD, I realised that it’s a genuine, government-authorised higher education institution.” Mashrur joined UCBD right after his O Levels. The prospect of completing his foundation locally while still opening up pathways to international universities sealed the deal for him. Mashrur successfully completed his foundation, and when he considered the convenience and low cost of completing an international degree in Dhaka, he opted to do a three-year University of Lancashire Business and Marketing degree at UCBD. For Bareerah Al Manha Begh, who is from Chittagong Grammar School (CGS), UCBD offered a perfect pathway to an international education. She initially joined UCBD because her family wanted to keep her close while she prepared to study overseas. She said, “I had always wanted to study in Australia. But I was young, and it made my parents comfortable and happy to keep me close for a bit longer. UCBD gave me the option to complete my foundation and then the first year of my Monash University degree in Bangladesh. It was amazing to get the same high-quality Monash education while still being at home, and it made the transition to university cheaper and easier for me.” A Monash student from day one When Mashrur and Bareerah enrolled in the Monash University foundation and continuing degree programmes, they were Monash students from day one. Bareerah shared, “At UCBD, we use exactly the same online learning resources and materials as Monash students in Australia. The curriculum is also the same, and the teaching style is the same because all the lecturers are Monash-approved and use the Monash method. Studying at UCBD is like being in Australia!” UCBD students have a head start because they are already familiar with international standards and methods of teaching and learning. This makes their academic transition to an overseas university much smoother and gives them the confidence they need to plan their next steps. Mashrur Mahmud Khan Academic and emotional support Bareerah and Mashrur believe that what sets UCBD apart is not only the academic rigour, but also the strong support system it offers to students. “The lecturers are always available, even outside formal lecture times, and they are always ready to help and advise. When I had a family emergency, the Student Support team helped me take some time off, and my lecturers worked out a new study plan so I could complete my courses and exams on time,” said Mashrur. Bareerah pointed out that UCBD was really helpful when she decided to switch from science to business studies. She said, “When I decided to make the change, all my lecturers helped me, and sometimes, I relied on them emotionally rather than my peers.” Beyond the classroom UCBD also helped the students to grow outside the classroom. Bareerah talked about how she used to be quite shy but became more outgoing and confident through getting involved in student activities and organising events. “I met people from all over the country, and made some great friends. UCBD helped me develop my leadership and communication skills, and all my contributions were recognised with certificates presented to me by Professor Hew Gill, President of UCBD,” she said. Mashrur too found his stride in Dhaka. He shared, “Before UCBD, I had been part of small events in Chattogram. But after coming to UCBD, I got to work with big names like Let’s Viber and Tyger Media. I even helped with the Arka Fashion Week and an Atif Aslam concert. The network and visibility I gained at UCBD changed everything.”. Looking ahead Mashrur is now completing his UK degree at UCBD, while Bareerah is preparing to move to Monash University in Australia. As they prepare for the next chapters of their lives, they credit UCBD for helping them find purpose, for building their confidence, and for showing them how to study local and think global. UCBD holds orientation for the second 2025 batch of Monash students

UCBD welcomes second MUFY cohort of 2025 with orientation
Universal College Bangladesh (UCBD), the exclusive partner of Monash College Australia, has successfully held the orientation for its second 2025 intake of the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) programme. he orientation took place at the UCBD Gulshan campus, welcoming new students and their families to the globally recognised foundation programme that guarantees admission to Monash University in Australia or Monash Malaysia upon successful completion. The session began with a welcome address from Professor Muhammad Ismail Hossain, Dean of Academic Affairs at UCBD and a Monash alumnus. Professor Hew Gill, President and Provost of UCBD, then addressed the students and their parents, highlighting the programme’s academic strength. “UCBD MUFY results in Dhaka are the best in the world—better even than Monash results in Australia,” said Professor Hew. “Every student who passes is guaranteed a place at a world top-40 university, and all our UCBD students pass. The event has been the second batch of 2025, following the successful orientation of the first intake held in January 2025, said a press release on Tuesday. The Monash Foundation Year is a comprehensive programme that guarantees students a place to study for their degree at Monash University Australia or Monash Malaysia. The orientation session kicked off with opening remarks from Professor Muhammad Ismail Hossain, dean of academic affairs at UCBD, who is himself a Monash alumnus. Developing skilled resources for emerging sectors in Bangladesh
Only a quick scroll through LinkedIn will show you hundreds of promising job openings in different fields such as software development, data analytics, cybersecurity and so on. Despite thousands of students graduating every year, the irony remains that while different industries are seeking more skilled engineers, programmers, and technical experts, our market is oversaturated with non-STEM graduates, particularly business graduates. As a result, the supply of talent has been unable to keep pace with the demand from emerging industries. As we observe World Youth Skills Day 2025, celebrating the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship, we need to reflect on the mismatch between skills and opportunities in Bangladesh. In recent years, there has been a significant shift in employment trends. Emerging sectors such as cybersecurity, fintech, information technology, renewable energy, agritech, and logistics are rapidly expanding. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, roles in machine learning, cybersecurity, AI (Artificial Intelligence), software development, and data analytics are among the fastest-growing sectors across the world. In Bangladesh, ICT (Information Communication and Technology) exports are growing, representing the demand for digital talent. On the other hand, it has highlighted a significant challenge – the widening skill gap we have in our market. Even though thousands of students graduate every year nationwide, a more considerable portion remain unemployed or underemployed due to a mismatch between academic knowledge and industry requirements. We must invest in people, not just with scholarships or internships but with the proper strategy. Government and educational institutions, as well as development organisations and the private sector, can play a significant role in bridging the gap According to a study, while 47.3 per cent of youth in our country reported being employed, a substantial 13.7 per cent are actively seeking jobs but remain unemployed, and a notable 39 per cent are neither seeking employment nor entrepreneurship. Another study shows that more than 28 per cent of university graduates face difficulty securing a proper job that aligns with their academic degrees. On top of it, employers are continuously raising the issue of a shortage of technical competencies. Ironically, when the job market is filled to the brim with applicants, industries are starving for skilled workers. At my workplace, we have felt it firsthand. We are constantly hiring graduates, but fewer are joining who are job-ready. By job-ready, I mean they would be ready to solve problems, innovate, and think critically from the first day. In fintech alone, the demand for talent in areas like data science, application development, and digital security is growing faster than we can fill these roles. Thus, investing in talent development and education has become quite crucial. Khaled Sarker According to the QS World Future Skills Index 2025, Bangladesh ranks 61st out of 83, primarily because our people in most cases are unable to adopt new skills quickly. According to the International Labor Organisation (ILO), nearly 50 per cent of the working-age population is unemployed. It’s a highly staggering number, and we are completely behind, especially when the clock is ticking. We must address the issue of the mismatched skills of graduates and industries. If our nation truly wants to sustain its economic growth and remain competitive globally, then we must rethink our approach to skill-building and education. After last year’s student-led movement, the focus has definitely shifted towards important discussions about the significance of skill-based education and opportunities. While leaders and policymakers have acknowledged that we need to invest more in skills development, digital literacy, and employment generation, the situation remains the same – dire, limited, and uneven. In order to bring change, we need active and ongoing collaboration between industry, academia, and government. We must ensure that the degrees are aligned with real-world skills, like data analysis, green technology, cloud computing, and AI. The experiential learning model ensures that students are employable and ready to lead in an ever-changing economic landscape. Apart from collaboration, a national strategy must promote STEM education at all levels, from primary to higher education. We should embed a global curriculum that is both adaptable and future-oriented. Such a curriculum will ensure our younger generation will not be left behind. Another important aspect is that we must reskill our existing workforce. Many people in the mid-career period feel disconnected from the job market’s evolving needs. Thus, academics can offer short-term courses to reskill the workforce, like AI, coding, data science, and digital marketing. These courses can enable professionals to remain adaptable, valuable, and relevant. Bangladesh’s future lies in building infrastructure, increasing exports, and primarily nurturing a workforce that is agile, future-ready, and intelligent. We must ensure that students in Bangladesh become lifelong learners, so innovation, adaptability, and skill development can become the cornerstones of our nation’s growth. Remember this: economic growth will mean nothing if our people are left behind. Capital can be invested, and infrastructure can be built, but without skilled minds, potential will remain unrealized. So, it is of utmost importance that the right measures are taken, with a concentrated focus on industry-academia collaboration, at the right time to address the evolving needs of the emerging markets. To develop our nation, we must invest in people, not just with scholarships or internships but with the proper strategy. Government and educational institutions, as well as development organisations and the private sector, can play a significant role in bridging the gap.
